Samaria Gorge

The route starts from Xyloskalo. A staircase with wide stairs leads down to the gorge and facilitates the rapid descent of hikers.
The trail follows a riverbed through a magnificent wooded area with tall trees and an amazing view. Halfway there is the abandoned settlement of Samaria, with a small 14th century Byzantine church, dedicated to Saint Mary the Egyptian saint, who gave her name to the area ("Samaria"). The church contains interesting frescoes. It is located on the south side of the village and can be reached via a path that starts from the helipad.
One of the most impressive parts of the trail is the Iron Gates where the rocks, just 3 meters from the other, rise to 600 meters. The walk in the National Park is 13 km, but visitors have to walk 3 km to reach the village "Agia Roumeli" from where the boats make the transfer back to Chora Sfakion. To reach the gorge, you must first go to Omalos, in the village of Xyloskalo, at an altitude of 1250 meters. The best way to get to Omalos is by public bus or an organized group. In Agia Roumeli you have to take one of the ferries that return to Chora Sfakion and then a KTEL bus at night back to Chania.
